Installation for: small (e.g. Arabidopsis), medium (e.g. barley) and large (e.g. maize) plants
Environmental monitoring: temperature, humidity, light intensity
Parameters: plant height and width, projected leaf area (top, side view), bulk fluorescence, moisture content (NIR), (surface temperature: thermography
Capacity: 384 (up to 4608) small plants, up to 1584 intermediate plants, or 396 large plants
Average experiment duration: 4-6 weeks

Small plant phenotyping module

Plants (e.g., Arabidopsis, Brachypodium; max. height of 40 cm) are cultivated in individual pots (max. 10 cm plant diameter), trays of 6 (max. 4.5 cm plant diameter), or trays of 12 (max. 3 cm plant diameter) in a phytochamber with controlled conditions (temperature range: 10 to 40 °C, relative humidity: 40 to 75 %, illumination: 120 – 500 μmole/m2s PAR). Pots or trays are placed in carriers transported on a conveyor belt system throughout the growth chamber with a (far) infrared-sensitive CCD camera installed inside for thermography (leaf temperature), and are moved to three consecutive imaging boxes (outside the chamber) for fluorescence imaging (excitation: 400-500 nm, emission: 520-750 nm), visible imaging (390-750 nm), and near infrared imaging (1450-1550 nm) using in each case top view and side view CCD cameras (with multiple side views possible). Before re-entering the growth chamber carrier weights are recorded and plants are watered (or supplied with nutrient solution) on a balance/watering station. The platform accommodates up to 384 individual carriers allowing the parallel cultivation / monitoring of max. 384 / 2304 / 4608 individuals grown in pots, trays of 6, or trays of 12, respectively. All operations are automated and are computer controlled.

 

Medium and large plant phenotyping module

Plants (medium size: max. height of approx. 140 cm, max. diameter 20 cm, large size: max. height of approx. 220 cm, max. diameter 48 cm) are cultivated in individual pots placed in carriers (with single pots or up to 4 pots per carrier) and are cultivated in a climate controlled glass house (temperature range: 15 - 35 °C with min. temperature 10° below outside temperature; relative humidity: 60 - 85%; supplementary illumination: up to 350 μmole/m2s PAR). Carriers are transported on a conveyor system throughout the glasshouse compartment (ca. 100 m2) and moved to three consecutive imaging boxes (within the climate controlled compartment) for near infrared imaging (1450-1550 nm), visible imaging (390-750 nm), and fluorescence imaging (excitation: 400-500 nm, emission: 520-750 nm) using in each case top view and side view CCD cameras (with multiple side views possible). Carrier (including pots and plants) weights are recorded and plants are watered (or supplied with nutrient solution) on a balance/ watering station. The platform accommodates up to 407 individual carriers allowing the parallel cultivation / monitoring of max. 407 (single pot per carrier) up to 1628 plants (4 pots per carrier), respectively. All operations are automated and computer controlled.
